Marriage

Arrangements must be made at least six months in advance of the proposed date.  Please call the Rectory to arrange for an interview.

Required documentation:

  1. 1.      BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE – of Catholic parties.  These must be recent copies dated within six months prior to the wedding.  Please note that the “original” certificate does not fulfill the requirement.  Confirmation information should be recorded on the document.
  2. 2.      LETTER OF FREEDOM AND PERMISSIONwhen neither the bride nor the groom is a member of Mary’s Nativity-St. Ann Parish.  This permission must be granted by the pastor or priest from the bride’s or groom’s home parish.
  3. 3.      AFFIDAVITS OF FREEDOM TO MARRY – according to the New Code of Canon Law, publication of Marriage Banns is no longer a requirement.  Parents, relatives, or long time close friends of the bride and groom must sign affidavits that both parties are free to marry regardless of the couple’s age.  There must be two witnesses for each party.

MARRIAGE LICENSE – should be obtained well in advance of the wedding at any New York State Marriage License Bureau.  To get a license, you both must appear and present proof of age and pay a fee.  The license is valid for sixty days after the date of issue; however, it may not be used in the first 24 hours after it has been issued.  Weddings cannot be performed until after this time period has elapsed.  For further information, you may call the Marriage License Bureau at 212-669-2400.

Marriage Preparation is required for all couples.  We encourage couples to attend Pre Cana at least six months before the wedding.  Couples must register in advance.  Registration can be done on line at www.bqonlineformation.org/precana or contact:
